Evaluation pt2

Question 2

The second question as part of the evaluation task is: How does your media product represent particular social groups.

First of all, one social group our media product represents is the working class. This is shown through the character of younger Jack. Younger Jack is meant to come from a relatively poor background and lives in a small flat in London, with his mum who is a single parent. This is a result of Jack's dad leaving his wife and son when Jack was a young child and this caused a lot of financial problems for them. Jack's PE  teacher, who is played by Alan Shearer, acts as a motivator and father figure to Jack throughout his childhood. However, Jack is represented as the upper working class by the nice TV which features in the title sequence. This is to show that Jack is not really poor and has relatively nice luxuries. We do show the transition as age gets on the richer you get and in this instance it is due to Jack signing for a professional football club. We also show that he is in the working class originally with the scene of him signing his own contract in a public school. This shows he was a regular citizen and could not afford to go to private school and is in fact in state education.

In addition, another social group our media product represents is the upper middle class. This is portrayed through the character of older Jack. This is shown in the title sequence through the clothing of Jack in scenes such as when Jack is signing the contract and the scene in the changing room where Jack is seen looking at the number 1o shirt. He is seen to be wearing a very nice and expensive shirt as well as a tie. This is to emphasise his wealth he has gained from signing for Tottenham Hotspur and becoming a professional footballer. Although this is not shown in the title sequence, as Jack's income increases his arrogance does also. This is part of the narrative and this is representing a real life problem when people have a sudden influx of fame and fortune it overwhelms them and gets to their head.

Finally, a social group our media product represents is younger males. In the title sequence there are two stages of a younger male which is shown in the title sequence. Younger Jack is portrayed to be around the age of 11/12 and younger Jack is portrayed to be around the age of 18/19. Despite Jack growing up there is a scene in the title sequence that shows there is a hint of young boy despite Jack growing up. There is a scene where he is looking up at his heroes who play for Tottenham Hotspur. This shows that there is an inner child still in him and he does not forget where his inspiration came from.
