Final Thoughts

Thoughts

With regards to filming, I feel as if our schedule for filming should have been a bit more frequent instead of concentrating on other aspects of the coursework, such as blogging and our evaluation (towards the end of the coursework). I feel as if communication with most members of the group was good and we created a group chat to organise when we were going to film for both our title sequence and group videos for the evaluation. However, I feel as if the communication for the most part of the task was not suitable and we should have made more of an effort to arrange filming dates.

Preparation and Filming Day 15

Filming Day 15

On Saturday 15th I filmed some extra footage at my house to add the extra and final pieces to our title sequence. I filmed a few pieces of footage to show the comparison and contrast of little Jack's career to older Jack's career. Firstly, I filmed a scene of Spurs shirt with boots and a trophy on top of it with my phone. This is to show it is home footage and how excited I am about having these accolades and items. This is in comparison to Kallum and Kaan filming one of Kallum's brother's shirt and boots to show the progression. Also, I filmed some of my trophies along with some Tottenham shirts for a scene we could add some titles in. I sent these clips to Kaan as he is the head editor and has the necessary tools at hand to edit.

Evaluation pt7

Question 7

The last question of the evaluation is: Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

We answered this question as a group as we felt our answers and opinions were very similar. We recorded this on Tolani's phone and uploaded it to Soundcloud -

Evaluation pt6

Question 6

The sixth question of the evaluation is: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?

We also decided to answer this question as a group as we all had different and new experiences with technology as a group. We used a green screen in this video also.

Evaluation pt5

Question 5

The fifth part of the Evaluation task is; how did you appeal/attract your audience?

Firstly, I feel as if we appealed and attracted our audience by creating one character who can appeal to many males of different ages. Jack is portrayed to be at two stages of his life in our media product, both at the age of 12-13 and around 17-18. This appeals to audiences because this allows for a wide range of boys to relate to the protagonist and build a connection, whether it be through real life issues, the common interest of football or having dreams and aspirations. This would then build up interest from possible viewers of the media product and would then lead to increased ticket sales. In addition, this story line can also appeal to males of older ages because it could be reminiscent/nostalgic of dreams and aspirations they had when they were younger.

Furthermore, another way in which our media product appealed/attracted audiences was by the use of star power. We tried to use and incorporate big names within the film industry that would be very likely to feature in an independent and niche film. We used stars such as Tom Holland, who plays Peter Parker in the upcoming Spider-Man film, and Jacob Tremblay, who featured in the Smurfs 2. We felt as if these up and coming, young actors would relish the chance to feature in this film and as if they would attract people to come and see the media product due to those being young but at the same time well known and well received actors.

In addition, we also appealed to our audience by asking them to view our title sequence and fill out a feedback sheet on what they feel would improve the product and what they liked about the product. We felt as if this was very beneficial and necessary because they were the demographic that we were trying to appeal to and getting possibly improvements would give us an indication as to what would make our product better. We did receive good feedback and we made the recommended changes in order to get more people to be appealed to our product.

Preparation and Filming - Day 14

Filming - Day 14

On Thursday 13th, myself and Kaan got the train to White Hart Lane, home of Tottenham Hotspur, to get some footage around the ground and of a poster inside the Spurs shop. We did this because older Jack does sign for his boyhood club, Tottenham and we felt it would be a good idea to include some footage, and an over the shoulder shot, in the title sequence. We took a tripod and camera with us.

Evaluation pt4

Question 4

This is the fourth question as part of the evaluation task, I recorded a voice note and uploaded it to soundcloud. The question is; Who would be the audience for your media product?

Preparation and Filming- Day 13

Filming - Day 13

On Wednesday 12th, Kallum and Kaan filmed Kallum's younger brother watching football and filmed some of his accolades he has received. This is in order to  continue to show and emphasise the transition from younger Jack to older and grown up Jack. Furthermore, Kaan also started to create a newspaper article that will possibly feature in the title sequence, this was done using Microsoft Word and the headline will feature a heap of praise for Jack's recent performance for Tottenham.

Evaluation pt3

Question 3

The third question of the evaluation is: What kind of media institution would distribute your product and why?

We answered this question as a group and filmed us individually giving our own opinions to the question as they all link. We used a green screen and footage from our title sequence features in the background.

Evaluation pt2

Question 2

The second question as part of the evaluation task is: How does your media product represent particular social groups.

First of all, one social group our media product represents is the working class. This is shown through the character of younger Jack. Younger Jack is meant to come from a relatively poor background and lives in a small flat in London, with his mum who is a single parent. This is a result of Jack's dad leaving his wife and son when Jack was a young child and this caused a lot of financial problems for them. Jack's PE  teacher, who is played by Alan Shearer, acts as a motivator and father figure to Jack throughout his childhood. However, Jack is represented as the upper working class by the nice TV which features in the title sequence. This is to show that Jack is not really poor and has relatively nice luxuries. We do show the transition as age gets on the richer you get and in this instance it is due to Jack signing for a professional football club. We also show that he is in the working class originally with the scene of him signing his own contract in a public school. This shows he was a regular citizen and could not afford to go to private school and is in fact in state education.

In addition, another social group our media product represents is the upper middle class. This is portrayed through the character of older Jack. This is shown in the title sequence through the clothing of Jack in scenes such as when Jack is signing the contract and the scene in the changing room where Jack is seen looking at the number 1o shirt. He is seen to be wearing a very nice and expensive shirt as well as a tie. This is to emphasise his wealth he has gained from signing for Tottenham Hotspur and becoming a professional footballer. Although this is not shown in the title sequence, as Jack's income increases his arrogance does also. This is part of the narrative and this is representing a real life problem when people have a sudden influx of fame and fortune it overwhelms them and gets to their head.

Finally, a social group our media product represents is younger males. In the title sequence there are two stages of a younger male which is shown in the title sequence. Younger Jack is portrayed to be around the age of 11/12 and younger Jack is portrayed to be around the age of 18/19. Despite Jack growing up there is a scene in the title sequence that shows there is a hint of young boy despite Jack growing up. There is a scene where he is looking up at his heroes who play for Tottenham Hotspur. This shows that there is an inner child still in him and he does not forget where his inspiration came from.

Evaluation pt1

Question 1

The first question of the evaluation task is: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Firstly, I believe that my media product, The Journey, does use some forms and conventions of real media products. For example, one of them is the type of equipment we used to create the media product we have created. Throughout the process of of our media product being created we have used multiple pieces of equipment and software. We have used things such as; cameras, tripods, lights, dollies, steady cams, Final Cut Pro, Motion. These are things that both independent and big Hollywood film companies use in order to produce their media products. Without these things companies would not be able to make their media products. We did not use unconventional methods of editing and filming, using stock as this method is outdated and we wanted to be conventional in order to be more successful at box office.

In addition, our media product also does use some forms and conventions of real media products. This is because film companies that release Drama/Sport are typically independent, such as Channel4 and BabyCow productions and our media product follows this convention because our film is also an independent film. If our film was produced by a big Hollywood company/conglomerate then it would have gone against the forms and conventions of real media products since there are not many Hollywood companies that have released media products with the genre of drama and the sub genre of sport.

Furthermore, another way in which our media product uses the forms and conventions of real media products is the incorporation of social realism and factors such as settings and characters in the films. Typically, within films that have the genre of Sport and Drama there is a background story involved, such as in Goal! there is always a romantic subplot that audiences can relate to whereas in our media product we added the story of a poor child. In addition, we also had the conventional settings in a Sport Drama film, such as a football pitch, the home of the protagonist and an office (where the contract was signed by older Jack and this setting was established by having a table and Jack in formal clothes). We also have the typical character who features in Sport Drama film such as the protagonist who is aspiring to be a footballer.

Also, like many other media products, we created narrative enigma through the use of shots. A shot we used in order to create narrative enigma is the over the shoulder shot. We used this a few times, namely in the contract signing scenes and the scene of Jack at White Hart Lane. We felt as if not showing his face would create buzz because people would want to know what he looks like and this makes it a bit more mysterious, as we try to incorporate some more drama into the product.

However, as well as this I believe our media product also challenges the forms and conventions of real media products. This is due to the genre we chose, which was drama with the sub genre of sport. This challenges the forms and conventions of real media products because it is very unconventional for a film to be released with the genre of drama and the sub genre of sport. There are very few examples where this type of film has been released and these examples are; Bend it Like Beckham and the Goal! Trilogy.
