Animatic

Animatic

Here is the animatic our group produced, Kaan added the soundtrack and edited it and Tolani and I drew the storyboard whilst Kallum added the type of the shot. The animatic shows the narrative of our whole title sequence, which is;

Equilibrium - This is where Jack, the protagonist, is at school, his mum is a single mum, they are not well off and Jack has an interest in football but he is unable to fully pursue his dream of being a professional footballer due to the fact he doesn't have good football boots and has no encouragement. His PE teacher acts like a father figure to him and encourages him to keep on following his dreams. He has a contact who is a scout for Tottenham Hotspur and organises and trial for Jack. Jack then gets signed by Tottenham and has the financial support he has always lacked, allowing him to buy nice football boots and clothes.

—Disruption - Jack starts to let the fame get to his head and some of his friends start to lose patience with him.

—Disequilibrium - Jack gets injured playing for Tottenham and the person who injured him was one of his bullies from Secondary School. Jack breaks his ankle and is out for a lengthy amount of time, whilst he is recovering a friend of his visits him a lot and they get closer.
—Attempt to restore Equilibrium - Jack is recovering from his injury and is striving to hit the form he once hit. His aim is to return for the cup final. His girlfriend says to him that she doesn't want him to behave like he did before.

—New Equilibrium - Jack returns for the cup final, against the team in which he broke his ankle against. Jack scores the winning goal.

Fonts

Fonts

Here are some of the fonts my group and I considered using for our title and also the font we have decided to use and why. All of these fonts are sans serif and this represents our genre. In addition, the sporty themes of these different fonts connotes the genre of our media product, which is Drama with the sub genre of sport.

My group and I have decided to use the font Jersey M54. This is because we felt as if this font suited the title and that the other options we had looked at were more suitable in a cartoon picture or a magazine cover. In addition, we also asked some of our classmates what font they would feel would be the best to use and the vast majority agreed with us and chose Jersey M54 to be the most suitable. Moreover, on a deeper level we chose this font because of the rough edges the font has and we felt as if this linked to the film because it shows that nothing is smooth in life and there will always be challenges and obstacles in your way.

Production Company

Our film is an independent, British film and this means that there will be multiple production companies in order to generate the funding for the film. We chose these production companies because we believe that these will both fund and market our film effectively and successfully and help us be successful at film festivals and at release. The production companies we have chosen to produce our films are;
  • Antenna Pictures
  • Baby Cow Animation
  • Creative England
  • Grass Roots Media
  • TVE
Genre and Similar Films

Our film fits in the genre of a drama and it fits under the sub genre of sport. We believe that it is a drama because the film includes scenes that focus on issues such as single parenting, lack of financial support and bullying. it also includes a romantic sub plot in which the protagonist has to choose between his girlfriend and his footballing career. Examples of similar films to ours are;
  • Goal Trilogy
  • Creed
  • Fight Club
  • Moneyball
  • Bend it like Beckham

Audience Profile

—As a football film, the target audience of the movie will be young male teenagers. The main reason being that most teenagers play football and always dream of becoming a footballer. Teenagers will be the primary audience as well as football fans. I would argue that the secondary audience of our film will be young adults. This is because the films' sub genre is drama, so they will take the film a bit more seriously compared to young teenagers who would mainly be going to the film because of its sports genre. We also believe the secondary audience of this film would be young adults because some of the issues in the film could be similar to things those people are currently going through/have gone through and they can relate to the charter in he film.

Budget

—The budget for our film is £3,500,000. We believe that it is a suitable amount in order to make a successful film and our target in the opening weekend is £1,500,000 and we hope the final total gross to be £4,000,000-£4,500,000. We hope our multiple production companies will market our film successfully as well as organizing for our film to feature at at least two film festivals, which would hopefully lead to a positive critic reception and nominations for awards.

Director

—The director of our film is Frank Darabont. We chose this director because he has proven himself as a very successful director with directing films and series such as The Shawshank Redemption and The Walking Dead (2010-2011). His successes in drama was vital to us because that is the main genre of our film and some of his other works have been with films with small budgets. This proves that he can make a good film with a small budget. His success with films and series with different sub genres also attracted us to use him because it proves that he is not limited to one sub genre and is very flexible.

Release Date

—We have chosen the release date for our film to be Friday 14th of April because it is during the easter holidays and therefore this will mean kids are off school so we hope that this will increase the gross overall and the gross during the opening weekend. We have also chosen this time of year because it is just before the summer, which means that film festivals will be looking to nominate films for awards. We hope that our film will be considered for nomination and even possibly have a chance at winning an award. This is because one of the main successes for an independent film is to feature at film festivals and receive awards. In addition, many film critics will be at the film festivals and independent films also look for positive critic reception.

Preparation and Filming - Day 1

Preparation and Filming- Day 1

During the first week after half term, our group started to film some parts of the title sequence. On the Tuesday Kaan and Kallum rented out a camera and took it to Goals with them to film Kallum's little brother (who is playing younger Jack) to film him taking shots at goal. This is the first part of showing the transition of Jack and how he has progressed as a footballer. It also shows how he is better off financially because Jack will be wearing his Tottenham shirt (the team he got scouted for) whereas Kallum's brother is wearing his local football team's kit.

Genre Analysis Drama/Sport

Goal II

In the title sequence for the film goal, star power is used heavily throughout the title sequence. This is because the film is a football film and it wants to use football's biggest stars at the time to attract an audience to watch the film. Well known footballers were used in the title sequence such as Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi, Roberto Carlos and David Beckham, as pictured below. Including these galaticos in the title sequence would automatically attract football fans to watch the film, as it did with myself.

Furthermore, in this title sequence archive footage is used from a game that occurred between Barcelona and Real Madrid in which it finished 3-0 to Barcelona. This is quite conventional for a film with the sub-genre of sport to include archive footage in the title sequence because it is a effective method of giving background knowledge of the protagonist/other characters and it is also an effective way of setting up the narrative, which is known as a prologue.

In addition, an orchestral soundtrack was used in this title sequence and this is unconventional for a film with a sub-genre of sport. This is because when a footage of a football game is being shown then you can usually hear the crowd or the players talking. This soundtrack is contrapuntal because the orchestral music does not fit in with the footage shown. However, an orchestral soundtrack could have been used because it is typically a European style of music and the setting of the title sequence was Spain and the majority of the film is also set in Spain.
